9/20: Magic Mushroom Day
Like 4/20… but for mushrooms.
September 20th is Global Magic Mushroom Day, a holiday established in 2015 by Nicholas Reville “as a day for activists and enthusiasts to come together to talk about policy reform — and maybe even partake in the medicine itself.”
As the psychedelic industry evolves, so do all of the research studies and anecdotal accounts of psilocybin’s benefits:
- Moms are microdosing to relieve stress (NPR)
- Johns Hopkins Medicine announced in a follow-up study that psilocybin showed to decrease depressive symptoms for up to 1 year (previously, the study stated 1 month)
- Beyond studying psilocybin for alcohol use disorder (caveat: there’s a major study flaw regarding lack of blinding, but there is still promise!), researchers are also looking into its use for obesity.
While psilocybin is not legal nationally in the US, there are many jurisdictions that have decriminalized its use.
Where psilocybin is decriminalized in the US as of 9/20/22:
Denver, Colorado
Santa Cruz, California
Oakland, California
San Francisco, California
Oregon (entire state)
Seattle, Washington
Detroit, Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Somerville, Massachusetts
Cambridge, Massachusetts…
